Art & History Museums of Maitland

Welcome to another Maitland Chamber of Commerce Business Spotlight! We are excited about this week’s member, the Art & History Museums of Maitland. With four museums spread across five acres, visitors encounter original art and historic artifacts, as well as the ability to watch local artists at work and learn from some of Central Florida’s finest art instructors. The four museums are the Maitland Art Center, Maitland Historical Museum, Telephone Museum, and Waterhouse Residence & Carpentry Museum.

The Art & History Museums of Maitland is unique for its campus that exemplifies Mayan Revival Architecture and is a National Historic Landmark, its Art School offering classes, and its Artist Program which welcomes national and international artists to live and work on campus. Rental spaces are also available for weddings, photoshoots, and meetings. Fundraising, maintaining an 83-year-old campus, and balancing safety with accessibility during the pandemic have been challenges for this organization but the rewards are plentiful. They are proud to support artists and lifelong learners, giving kids and adults a creative outlet, and being a steward and resource for the Maitland community.

The merger of the separate art and history organizations occurred in 2010, and farther back from that, the founder chose to establish the campus as a winter retreat for artists back in the 1930s. Currently, the A&H has been a member of the Maitland Chamber of Commerce for many years with the plan to get to know and become partners with neighboring organizations and businesses.

Plans for the future include continuing to take steps to preserve elements of the historic campus, through the help of a professional preservation team to keep everything in good repair. Plans also include creating more mutually beneficial partnerships with local businesses in order to make thoughtful changes to serve artists, students, guests, and the community better. They are looking forward to getting back to events of larger sizes and executing the plans related to that future time. The A&H staff would like to commend their Co-Executive Directors for successfully and safely navigating the pandemic while retaining and supporting all staff.

The Art and History Museums of Maitland is located at 231 W. Packwood Ave. Maitland, FL 32751, and open from Tuesday through Sunday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Visit https://artandhistory.org/ for more information or call (407) 539 - 2181.
